Massage most commonly relieves stress and tension of everyday living that can cause unwanted health problems and illness. Massage is a term that describes over 250 techniques in which the hands are used to stimulate and soothe soft tissues of the body for therapeutic purposes. By kneading muscles to relax them and using friction to stimulate soft tissue circulation is increased and scar tissue between muscle fibers are broken up. Chiropractic care and massage therapy work together to provide maximum healing benefits. Patients of chiropractic and massage therapy will experience enhanced joint and muscle function, improved circulation, increased metabolism, less aches and pains, increased energy, and optimal spinal health. Massage treatments increase blood flow to all parts of the body and all its organs. This increased blood flow results in better overall function of the body, a better mood and overall better health.

Macomb/Shelby/Clinton Township Chiropractor for Numbness and Pinched Nerve Relief

A "pinched" nerve is a term that usually describes an underlying problem resulting from an injury, accident, fall, repetitive movement, or stress. Pinched nerves are most common in the low back or wrist and can be treated with chiropractic care.

What is a pinched nerve?
To understand if you are suffering from symptoms associated from a pinched nerve it is important to understand what it means to have a "pinched" nerve. A pinched nerve occurs when too much pressure is applied to a nerve by surrounding tissues such as bones, cartilage, muscles or tendons. This extra pressure causes inflammation of the nerve and interrupts the nerves function which results in pain, tingling, numbness, or muscle weakness. A pinched nerve can occur anywhere in your body but are most common in the spine as the result of a displaced vertebra (bone) or herniated disc, or in the wrist resulting in what is commonly known as carpal tunnel syndrome. Nerves are responsible for carrying communication signals between the brain and the body and sending messages to the muscles or skin. These nerves exit the spinal cord above and below each vertebra and extend into the arms, legs, brain, and every other part of the body. When a bone in the spinal column (vertebra) is out of place or turned slightly from its proper position, pressure can be placed on the nerve root. Several factors may cause a bone in the spinal column to become displaced such as a fall, an accident, an injury, repetitive movement on the job, staying in the same position for a long period of time (sitting at a computer all day), poor posture, or osteoarthritis. The symptoms of a pinched nerve include pain, numbness, burning sensation, tingling, "pins and needles" sensations, muscle weakness, or pain down the legs or arms. More severe symptoms may include headaches, stomach problems, sciatica, neck pain, asthma, allergies, or insomnia. If the pressure continues over a long period of time permanent nerve damage can occur.
Chiropractors are professionals trained to identify displaced vertebra, known as subluxations and specialize in the correction of these subluxations. Dr. McNeil of McNeil Chiropractic uses specific postural adjustments, postural traction, and postural exercises to move the displaced bone back into its proper position. These specific adjustments takes the pressure off the affected nerves, so they can re-establish proper communication, and allow health and healing to take place. The following measures can be used to relieve some of the pain associated with a pinched nerve until you are able to be treated by a chiropractor. For example, alternating between heat and ice, taking a hot shower, getting a massage, or doing general range of motion stretches and movements. These measures will not correct the problem that is causing the painful symptoms of a pinched nerve so it is important to see you chiropractor as soon as possible before the problem becomes worse. Dr. McNeil recommends several preventative measures after correction and healing has occurred. For example, maintain good posture, incorporate postural exercises into your daily routine, limit repetitive activities, maintain a healthy weight, and schedule routine chiropractic adjustments to maintain a proper spinal position. McNeil Chiropractic is an advanced spinal rehab facility that specializes in correcting many conditions resulting from auto accidents, work injuries, slip and falls, and stress from everyday life. Conditions that Dr. McNeil has had great success with include neck pain, herniated disc, pinched nerves, back pain, headaches/migraines, whiplash injury, carpal tunnel, numbness, sciatica, asthma, and sinus problems as well as many others. If you or someone you know is suffering from symptoms associated with a pinched nerve visit our website today and see if we can help you.

Macomb/Shelby Twp. Chiropractor: Dr. McNeil Scoliosis Treatment Specialist

Scoliosis is a common disorder that effects people of all ages but is most commonly seen in children over ten years old. It is a condition in which a person's spine is curved from side to side, shaped like an "s".
What is Scoliosis?
Scoliosis is a disorder that causes an abnormal sideways curving of the spine. This often occurs in childhood when the bones of the spine are still growing. Scoliosis is about two times more common in girls than boys and it is most common in children over ten years old.
Though the exact cause of scoliosis is unknown, it is thought that scoliosis is the result of a hereditary problem or an adaptation to some type of trauma, such as the birth process or an injury, such as falling off a bicycle. Since children fall more than 2,500 times by the time they are five years old, scoliosis is a very common condition seen in children. Spinal bones continue to grow well into the early 20s, so if left untreated scoliosis often worsens. There are three main types of scoliosis:
Functional scoliosis is when the spine is normal but an an abnormal curve develops because of another problem in the body. For example, one leg being shorter than the other or muscle spasms in the back may cause functional scoliosis. Neuromuscular scoliosis is when there is a problem when the bones of the spine are formed. In this type of scoliosis the bones of the spine may have failed to form completely or the bones failed to separate from each other. This type of scoliosis is much more severe and is often caused by other disorders such as, birth defects, muscular dystrophy, or cerebral palsy. Degenerative scoliosis occurs in older adults unlike the other types that are often seen in children and teens. This type of scoliosis is often caused by changes in the spine due to arthritis. The weakening of ligaments, tendons, and other soft tissue as well as bone spurs leads to the abnormal curvature of the spine in many older adults.
In most cases scoliosis is not painful and the most common symptom is the abnormal curve of the spine. In some cases, back pain may be a symptom, but this is often dismissed as "growing pains" in children. A simple examination can detect scoliosis. Scoliosis is usually detected from a low shoulder or hip, from the head appearing off center, or poor posture. Regular chiropractic examinations can reveal these small problems before they become serious. The medical approach to the treatment of scoliosis has been to wait and see how bad it gets, resulting in the use of unsightly braces and eventually surgery. McNeil Chiropractic's approach is to use specific postural and spinal adjustments, combined with corrective postural exercises to return the spine to a healthy and normal position. Dr. McNeil has had excellent success with scoliosis cases! He has treated patients young and old with cases of scoliosis ranging from mild to severe and received great results. Many of Dr. McNeil's scoliosis patients were able to correct the problem and avoid surgery and braces. McNeil Chiropractic specializes in spinal rehabilitation and are experts in the care of the bones, nerves, muscles, and connective tissues that make up about 60% of your body. If you or someone you know has scoliosis call McNeil Chiropractic at 586-566-2273 to schedule an appointment with Dr. McNeil to see how he can help you.

Macomb Township Michigan Chiropractor: Sciatica Low Back Pain Numbness Relief Specialist

The sciatic nerves are the largest nerves of the body & run down the back of each leg. When these nerves are irritated or injured severe leg pain, low back pain & numbness are the results. These painful symptoms describe what is known as sciatica.
Sciatica is a very common health complaint that usually affects men and women of various ages. The sciatic nerves are the largest nerves in the body formed by five smaller nerves that branch off of each side of the spinal cord and run down the back of each leg. When these nerves become irritated or affected by the inflammation of nearby soft tissues, doctors refer to this as sciatica. Sciatica describes the symptoms of low back pain, leg pain, numbness, and weakness that travels from the low back, through the buttocks and down the back of the leg. The cause of these painful symptoms can be one of a number of problems or it can simply be the physical and emotional stress of everyday life. It is important for people suffering from sciatica to understand that sciatica is a symptom of an underlying problem of something (usually a disc bulge) compressing or irritating one of five nerve roots that make-up the sciatic nerve. Sciatica is not a medical disorder. The underlying diagnosis is what needs to be treated in order to relieve the pain of sciatic nerve pain, not the symptoms of sciatica.
The most common cause of sciatic nerve pain is a bulging or herniated disc that puts pressure on the spinal cord and irritates nearby nerve roots. These small cartilage pads that are situated between spinal bones, also known as vertebra, are very important to our overall nerve function and spinal health. Each disc serves as a connector, spacer, and shock absorber for the spine. When these discs are healthy they are like a wet sponge which is flexible and may allow normal turning and bending. When the sponge is dry it becomes hard, stiff and can crack easily. Discs become hard and stiff and begin to deteriorate when normal circulation of the joints becomes impaired preventing the joint fluids from bringing in the nutrients necessary to keep the disc healthy. This is how many disc problems begin. Trauma or injury to the spine accelerates disc deterioration. A disc bulge is when the soft jelly like material in the middle of the disc pushes to one side and swelling occurs which can cause pressure on the spinal cord and nerve roots resulting in the painful symptoms associated with sciatica. A herniated disc is when the soft jelly like material in the middle of the disc ruptures through the outer edge of the disc and beyond to the surrounding nerves and soft tissues. This also results in the painful symptoms of sciatica such as low back pain, leg pain, tingling, and numbness.
Other causes of sciatica are spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, and spondylolisthesis. Spinal stenosis is when the spinal canal narrows and compresses the spinal cord and the nearby nerve roots. Spondylolisthesis refers to the misalignment or enlarging of vertebrae in the lumbar spine (lower back area). Both of these conditions are the result of spinal trauma, injury, or everyday stress on the body and cause symptoms similar to those associated with sciatica. Degenerative disc disease is another common cause of sciatic nerve pain. Degeneration refers to the process in which the body deposits calcium on the surface of adjacent bones or vertebra that are not moving properly. This is how the body responds to improperly functioning joints. This spinal decay process can result in the complete fusion of spinal bones causing many of the severe symptoms associated with sciatica. Degenerative disc disease can occur throughout the spine, it is not limited to the lumbar spine.
Chiropractic care is an excellent treatment for sciatica. In the past, treatment has involved pain medications, muscle relaxers, physical therapy, and even surgery. These treatments were not only harmful, addictive, and unnecessary but also ineffective in the treatment of sciatic nerve pain. The chiropractic approach is to use carefully directed and controlled pressure to remove the interference from spinal structures and effectively reduce nerve irritation and associated pain. McNeil Chiropractic specializes in spinal rehab and the restoration of normal spinal function through specific postural adjustments, postural traction and postural exercises. Dr. McNeil has helped many patients with sciatica as well as disc problems, low back pain, and degenerative disc disease. At McNeil Chiropractic it is our goal to help others achieve pain relief and maintain a normal spinal and postural position. Dr. McNeil knows that proper spinal function, joint function, and mobility are the key to a healthy spine and a healthy life. Postural chiropractic adjustments help restore mobility to joints which allows joint fluids to bring nutrients to spinal discs resulting in reduced disc bulging and inflammation. Dr. McNeil has helped many patients suffering from sciatica and other similar conditions avoid needless, risky surgery. Chiropractor Macomb/Shelby/Clinton Township Offers Carpal Tunnel & Neck Pain Relief

Carpal tunnel syndrome can occur when the spine and posture is out of allignment pinching on the nerves in the neck and upper back. These pinched nerves cause the pain, numbness, neck pain, tingling, and weakness associated with carpal tunnel.
You're working at your desk, trying to ignore the ache and numbness in your hand and wrist. The you feel the sharp, piercing pain up your arm and suddenly your neck feels stiff and tight. You notice your grip weakens and you have been dropping things more frequently over the past few months. If this sounds like you, you may be suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common, progressive over-use injury of the wrist, where the bones of the wrist misalign and put pressure on the median nerve. Anti-inflammatories, exercises, resting the area, and wearing splints do not work. Your doctor may suggest surgery, in which the transverse carpal ligament is cut in order to release the pressure on the median nerve. After surgery you will have to wear a wrist splint for several weeks and the pain and numbness may take several months to subside, if at all. It is not uncommon that surgical decompression fails. One study revealed that a group of patients with chronic nerve compression at the wrist had a 93.2% failure rate after surgery and medical management. Medical doctors suggest the problem is all in your head and tell you that you may have to live with severe pain for the rest of your life.
If you are suffering with carpal tunnel syndrome or you are iving with the pain from surgical decompression failure, there is hope. Research shows the cause of carpal tunnel syndrome is not in your wrist, but it may be coming from a problem in your neck known as double crush syndrome. Studies have shown that compression of the nerve often occurs at the wrist and in the neck. Researchers found that 75% of patients studies who had carpal tunnel also had nerve root irritation or damage in the neck and upper back. As a result, proper alignment is important at the wrist, elbow, and neck to prevent compression of the nerves that cause the pain, numbness, tingling, and weakness associated with carpal tunnel syndrome.
You do not have to suffer, chiropractic care can help. Chiropractic adjustments give quick relief without drugs or surgery. Misalignments in the spine at the neck and upper back cause abnormal compression on the discs, joints, and nerves which leads to arthritis, degeneration, pain, numbness, and weakness. All of which are symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome. Over-use of the wrist and elbow, poor posture, and lack of spinal maintenance can begin the process of spinal misalignment and nerve compression. Jobs like waitressing, cashiers, carpenters, computer operators, painters, and assembly line workers are all candidates for nerve compression and carpal tunnel syndrome. Since most people do not know that proper spinal maintenance can prevent nerve compression and the painful symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome, chiropractic care is often over looked. McNeil Chiropractic can help. Chiropractors are experts in diagnosing and correcting spinal misalignments and misalignments of joints such as wrists, elbows, shoulders, and knees. These misalignments are the cause of many spinal conditions such as neck pain, back pain, headaches/migraines, sciatica, numbness, disc bulges, carpal tunnel, and even sinus problems. A simple chiropractic examination can determine if your carpal tunnel is caused by spinal misalignments. Dr. McNeil will perform a thorough chiropractic examination for free. He will then develop a course of care plan consisting of specific postural adjustments, postural exercises, and postural tractions to correct misalignments in the neck, upper back, and wrist. With improved structure and function the painful symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome will diminish and eventually totally disappear. McNeil Chiropractic helps patients achieve relief without addictive drugs, harmful side effects, or painful, expensive surgery. One study showed that 98% of patients with double crush syndrome and carpal tunnel syndrome were relieved of their symptoms with chiropractic adjustments alone. Headaches. Everyone gets them. They can be mild, severe, annoying, or extremely debilitating and may not go away. Medications may simply dull the pain temporarily but this does not address the cause of these headaches. Most people suffering from headaches turn to the more natural and most often more effective approach to treating their headaches with chiropractic care. Headaches are a very common problem and a sign that somethings wrong. Chiropractic care is a proven way to obtain relief of the pain associated with headaches. There are several different types of headaches and chiropractic care not only relieves the pain but it corrects the common cause of headaches. The most common type of headache is a tension headache. Tension headaches are typically caused by physical or emotional stress in our daily lives. Stress then settles in the muscles as tension and can cause headaches. Tension headaches are usually easily treatable with chiropractic adjustments and will subside in frequency with just a few visits to the chiropractor. The second type of headache is a migraine headache. This is characterized by intense pain with sensitivity to light and sound. Migraine headaches are usually caused by impaired vascular flow and usually take more time to treat. A patient suffering from migraines should begin to experience pain relief after a few chiropractic adjustments and a full recovery after completing the prescribed care plan.
The most common cause of headaches is the malfunction and misalignment of spinal bones in the neck and upper back. When these bones lose their normal position, nerves and blood vessels to the head are affected and can result in headaches. Specific spinal and postural adjustments can help correct spinal misalignment and dysfunction created by various stresses in our lives. Many patients report headache relief from chiropractic care though it may take more than one visit to achieve pain relief and correct the underlying mechanical restrictions. Everyone is different and the length of care depends on the severity of each patients' condition. Macomb/Shelby/Clinton Township Chiropractor: Sports Injuries & Chiropractic

Problems can start with the spine and affect the extremities or they can begin with an extremity, such as a knee or an ankle and then create further problems in the spine. Either way, many sports related injuries involve the spine. In the past, sports injuries were limited to professional athletes, now there are more and more people (men & women) participating in regular sports and fitness activities. The majority of people are involved in such activities as golf, tennis, running, and activities such as aerobic classes or weigh t training. Unfortunately, injuries can not fully be avoided. No matter what activity a person does there is always the risk of injury. There are two major types of injuries, trauma injuries which include slip and fall accidents, or sport collisions and over-use injuries, also known as repetitive stress injury. Over-use injuries are most commonly experienced by those of us who are not professional athletes. For example, simple household chores can mimic a sport injury or over-use injury. Most people ask why do we get injured? The simple answer is that we play too hard, too long, or too fast. For example an over-use injury can occur by playing full speed before the body is fully warmed up. This is why it is very important to stretch and warm up the body before participating in any sports or fitness activities. If an injury does occur it is important to receive chiropractic care to ensure the injury heals properly and to help prevent future injuries from occurring. Many people do not understand how important it is to receive chiropractic care for a sport injury. Most people who experience an over-use injury may not believe the injury is that serious and think by resting the injury they will be healed in a couple of days. Rest is good, but alone it can take a long time for an injury to heal completely and if a person begins participating in a sport or activity too soon after an injury it will only make the injury worse or more severe. Why do you need a chiropractor for a sport injury? Chiropractic offers a balanced approach to the treatment and healing of sports injuries. Chiropractic care helps restore function to spinal joints that are fixated and not moving properly. Also, chiropractic care helps relieve pain and reduce inflammation that often occurs after an injury. By using postural adjustments to return spinal segments to there normal mobility and by using spinal rehab therapy to help supportive tissues such as muscles, tendons, and ligaments, McNeil Chiropractic can help the injured area return to normal function. Muscles, tendons, and ligaments depend upon proper joint movement for peak performance and at McNeil Chiropractic we know that sports injuries to these tissues can reduce range of motion, decrease blood supply, and takes you out of the game. Dr. McNeil can help get you back in the game sooner by using advanced chiropractic and rehab services to help normalize spinal function which speeds the healing of soft tissue and the injured area. This will help the injured area heal correctly and completely. After the injury has healed strategies for exercise and stretching will be discussed as well as the benefit of maintaining normal spinal function through regular chiropractic adjustments. Following these simple recommendations will help prevent future injuries and allow you, the athlete, to fully enjoy your chosen sport or activity. Many pro athletes utilize chiropractic care because they realize it helps maximize their athletic performance and helps prevent injuries. Whether you golf, play tennis, bicycle,or bowl, the best treatment for sports injuries is prevention! It is important for anyone involved in sports or fitness activities to utilize chiropractic care to keep their body healthy and prevent injury. Dr. McNeil specializes in sports injuries and has had great success correcting the cause of many sports injuries.
