Macomb Chiropractor Sheds Light On 5 Myths About Chiropractic

Common myths about chiropractic are the source of skepticism among people in today's society. Dr. McNeil provides factual answers to many common myths about chiropractic to help people better understand the benefits of chiropractic care.
The term myth is used to refer to false stories that are considered true. Most people believe the common myths about chiropractic because they have not adopted chiropractic care into their lifestyle as a way of maintaining their health. Also, many people do not fully understand the benefits and importance of chiropractic care. The following are five common myths about chiropractic that are the source of skepticism among people today.
1. You'll have to continue chiropractic care for the rest of your life.
Truth: Chiropractic care promotes a preventative lifestyle which means that periodic adjustments to maintain normal spinal health are recommended. Dentists recommending regular check-ups to prevent cavities and gum disease is no different than chiropractors recommending regular adjustments. A course of care plan will be determined by the chiropractor based on your condition and diagnosis. The number of visits recommended may be different for each individual patient depending on the diagnosis and severity of symptoms. Once a patient completes the care plan, monthly visits are recommended to maintain normal spinal health and posture. Of course, you decide how long you utilize the benefits of chiropractic care.
2. Spinal adjustments hurt.
Truth: Spinal adjustments actually provide instant relief for most people. If you are someone who is experiencing intense pain and has never received a spinal adjustment some "exercise soreness" may occur. This is similar to the soreness you would feel after a hard workout. The use of ice or heat, depending on the condition usually provides relief from this soreness. Most patients look forward to their scheduled spinal adjustments to maintain a pain free and healthy lifestyle.
3. Chiropractors only treat back pain.
Truth: Chiropractors also specialize in soft tissue disorders and conditions of joints and extremities such as ankles, wrists, and shoulders. Commonly treated soft tissue disorders include ulcers, migraine headaches, and ear infections which can be caused by disruptions in the nervous system caused by spinal misalignments. Some of the conditions we have seen improve are neck pain, back pain, sinus problems, numbness, sciatica, ADD/ADHD, carpal tunnel, asthma, hip pain, disc bulge, indigestion, auto injuries, sports injuries, and colic.
4. There is no reason a child should have to see a chiropractor.
Truth: When one considers all the trauma a child's spine goes through growing up, with the falls, and bumps from such things as learning to walk, then run, then ride a bicycle, it is easy to see how their bodies can be injured. A child experiences, on average, 2,500 falls by the time they are five years old. It is no question that children have back pain and suffer from a wide array of injuries just like adults. Doctors of chiropractic are trained to treat children, as well as adults, and use a gentle type of treatment that is appropriate for a child's size, condition and diagnosis. Also, children usually respond quickly to chiropractic treatments with little to no discomfort and as mentioned above, chiropractors treat many conditions that affect children.
5. Chiropractic is dangerous.
Truth: Chiropractic spinal adjustments are extremely safe when performed by licensed chiropractors. In fact, chiropractic adjustments are among the safest treatments available for most back and neck problems, as well as many other conditions. Acoording to one study commissioned by the Ontario Ministry of Health, "chiropractic manipulation is safer than medical management of low back pain and the risk of serious complications from lumbar spinal manipulation is rare." The study also stated that conservative treatment such as spinal manipulation should be pursued in most cases before considering surgery.
Hopefully, the facts explaining these common myths will help relieve the skepticism toward chiropractic care and encourage more people to adopt chiropractic care as part of their healthy lifestyle.
